I lost a very good friend last week. We became friends later in life, and eventually he became a client, though our relationship always felt far more personal than professional.

He would, no doubt, have a few wry, droll, mordant comments if he could see this, but it is exactly how I saw him: classic, stylish, and rarely overdone — except when the occasion truly called for it. Masculine, yet never afraid of a softer or more refined touch. Never boring. Quality, quality, quality in every detail.

He had a remarkable ability to make a space entirely his own while still respecting its architecture, history, and sense of place. Nothing was arbitrary. Everything was considered.

In many ways, the way he lived reflected the very best kind of design: confident, thoughtful, layered, and deeply personal.

I will miss his perspective, his humor, his eye, and his friendship very much.
